Colorado Eastern - More Dirt & Track
Wow. It was very rewarding and satisfying to see the first sections of track in place and ballasted. It really looked and felt "real" - and the project officially began to feel like a lot more fun.

Moving dirt and rocks now seemed to have a more defined purpose and the finished product was now starting to come to fruition... and then my four tons of dirt was all used up and I still needed more!

PROJECT DATE: 11/11/03

So I ordered three more tons of dirt and another 1/2 ton of large rocks, this time from different sources and for a little less money. The dirt was $60 and the rocks were $40, and now I had everything I needed in order to complete the project.

In retrospect, if I had the time and patience to shop around for dirt the first time I believe I could have saved about $100 - but when time, opportunity and weather all lined up on the same day back in October, I just decided to seize the moment and go for it. When it gets to be late fall in Michigan you just don't know when the days are going to turn bitter cold or if snow will start to fly!

Total cost-to-date: $835 + $100 = $935

It's starting to look ok - note the cribbing in the foreground, used to build the roadbed up along the front edge of the layout.

This is a view down the right side, you can see fresh dirt and loose track in the foreground, with finished track in the background.
